Bayard Rustin was one of the great strategists and organizers of the civil rights movement. He played a critical role in many of the movement’s successes, including the 1963 March on Washington, which attracted more than 250,000 participants and pressured lawmakers to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Rustin worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. and was an early advocate for nonviolent action. An openly gay man, Rustin defied stereotypes and challenged prejudices as a leader in the civil rights movement. Later in life he became an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, continuing his legacy of activism.
